Weekly Update - Autumn 1 / Week 6
Dear Parents and Carers
We’ve had another exciting week here in Reception. Here's a little peek into what we've been up to:
🗣️ Phonics Fun
Our phonics journey continues as we explore new sounds. This fortnight, we’ve introduced the phonemes:
- ck – as in duck. This is our first digraph - two letters that make one sound.
- e – as in egg
- u – as in umbrella
- r – as in rabbit
The children have been busy spotting these sounds in words, practising their letter formation, and blending them to read simple words. You might hear them sounding out words at home—do encourage this wonderful skill!
🔢 Maths Magic
In maths, we’ve been working on understanding the composition of 2 and 3. Through hands-on activities, songs, and stories, the children are learning how numbers can be made in different ways (e.g., 1 and 1 makes 2 ). This helps build a strong foundation for number sense.
🧸 School Tour
One of the highlights this week was our tour around the school to help the children become familiar with different areas of the school and feel part of our school community. We visited the library, the hall, the school office, the music room and the classrooms in the Mitchell Bailey building. We met lots of the adults working around the school too.
Later in the week, our class animals went missing, and we had to use picture clues to work out where they were hiding in the school!
🏃♂️ PE Progress
In PE, we’ve been focusing on two key skills:
- Stopping safely – learning how to control our bodies and stop with balance
- Moving balls with control – rolling, bouncing and catching balls with increasing accuracy
These activities support coordination, spatial awareness, and listening skills - all while having lots of fun!
As always, if you have any questions or would like to know more about what we’re learning, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
