Year 2 Summer 2025 Curriculum Overview

Subject 

Teaching and Learning 

Parental Involvement- We encourage parents to choose at least one activity for each subject to support your child in their learning. 

Maths 

The children will learn about fractions where they will recognise and find ½, ¼, 1/3 and ¾ of amounts and shapes. They will also learn to read o’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to and 5-minute intervals times on analogue clocks.  

In statistics, they will make, draw and interpret tally charts, pictograms and block graphs. 

They will also learn to describe positions, turns and movement. 

 

  • Explore cutting an apple or pizzas into different fractions e.g halves, quarters, thirds and compare which are larger/smaller. Share an amount to 20 into halves, quarters and thirds by sharing and see how many each person gets.  

  • Practise reading time on an analogue clock to o’clock, half-past, quarter past and quarter to times. Discuss the position of the hour and minute hand for each time. 

  • Your child can practise their Maths skills on TTRock Stars (see login sent home).

English 

English objectives will be covered through a variety of high-quality texts that will spark the pupils’ interest such as ’The Snail and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson, ‘Dear Teacher’ by Amy Husband and a variety of different instructional texts. The texts will cover poetry, fiction and non-fiction.  This term the children will write letters, instructions, narratives and a non-chronological report. They will write riddles in poetry. The children will learn skills to read aloud stories and poems, create story maps, do storytelling through drama and role-play and write in role. The children will learn grammar and punctuation discretely. 

  • At home, read as many storybooks as possible from different genres, e.g information books, modern stories and poems. If you have visited a place or been somewhere encourage your child write a letter/ a postcard to someone and discuss their features. 

  • Look at simple instructional texts e.g how to build a Lego model, How to grow your own sunflowers etc. Discuss the language used and the layout.  

  • Practice forming the letters of the alphabet using the letter formation phrases sent in the home-learning pack.  

Reading 

The children will be reading a variety of different types of books in their reading practice sessions that they have at school. They will have 3 sessions a week where we focus on using phonics knowledge to decode the words, read aloud with expression and then comprehension to show what they have understood from the text. The children will then bring home with them the book they have read in class to practice reading it again at home with you. 

  • Please listen to your child read at least 4 times per week. Children who read regularly at home make the most progress, not just in reading, but right across the curriculum. Please ask if us if you need any support. 

  • Be a reader yourself- let your child see you reading and talk about your enjoyment of reading. 

Science 

Living things and their habitats & Living things and their habitats around the world  

This term the children will explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive by thinking about life processes. 

They will identify and compare different habitats, describe how habitats provide for the basic needs of different animals and plants. 

They will also name different plants and animals found in different habitats and microhabitats. They will learn how these habitats provide for the basic needs of these living things. 

 

  • Go around your house and the local area. Look at the different animals and plants that grow there. Discuss how the environment differ from area to area. Look at microhabitats such as under stones or dried leaves and see what animals live there. How are these areas same and different?  

Computing 

This term, the children will learn to enter information on a spreadsheet. Then they will learn coding where they will create and edit simple programs using code blocks.  

 

  • Use the purple mash login that we are sending in the home learning resources packs and practice how to log in and browse through their working area. 

  • Visit the BBC Bitesize website and learn about computer science and algorithm  BBC coding   

 

RE 

How do some people talk to God? 

This term the children will describe what prayer means, identify some reasons why people might pray and identify some similarities and differences between the ways in which people pray. They will look at why special objects and items of clothing are important to some people when they pray. They will draw connections between prayer practices within the Hindu, Muslim and Jewish worldviews.  

 

Here is some key vocabulary we will be using with the children this term. It would be helpful to talk through these words with your child at home: Allah, Brahman, communicate, deity, mandir, mosque, prayer,  puja Qur'an, scripture, shrine etc 

 

Art 

Paint and Mixed Media: Life in colour   

The children will explore colour, texture and pattern in paint. They will look at collage work by Romare Bearden and create their own piece of collage.

Design & Technology 

Mechanisms – Wheels and Axles 

The children will develop and refine their cutting skills and explore different shapes for wheels. They will design and create pull along toys using cardboard, tape and string. Finally, they will apply finishing techniques to decorate and then evaluate their pull along toy against the design brief. 

  • Look at wheels on different vehicles and toys. Explore how they turn and what this makes the vehicle do.  

  • Cut out cardboard and paper shapes to practice and refine cutting skills, building confidence and precision with scissors. 

PSHE 

This term the children are learning about ‘Citizenships’, Economic Wellbeing and ‘Transition’. They will learn to recognise and appreciate people who are in their family, school and the local community and their responsibilities.  They will learn about where money comes from, exploring about wants and needs and discuss the role of bank account and cards. They will also identify what they are looking forward to when they move up to Year 3 next year.   

Here is some key vocabulary we will be using with the children this term. It would be helpful to talk through these words with your child at home:- 

rules, responsibility, community, democracy, election, vote, income, government, workplace, want, need, change etc 

History 

In history, the children will be learning about ‘What is a monarch?’. In this unit they will identify the qualities of a good monarch, explore the reign of William the Conqueror and how castles changed. 

Here is some key vocabulary we will be using with the children this term:  

Monarch, constitutional monarchy, government, rule, procession, absolute monarchy 

Geography  

In geography, the children will be learning about ‘What is it like to live in Shanghai?’. They will be comparing our local area to Shanghai and learning about China as a country and comparing to England. We will be looking and photos and using google earth to spot features. 

 

PE 

Target Games- They will develop the skills of throwing, rolling and striking towards a target. 

Striking and Fielding- In this unit the children will develop their understanding of the principles of defending (fielding) and attacking (batting). They will be using skills such as throwing, catching, tracking and striking a ball. They will learn to score points in these types of games using simple tactics and by abiding to the rules.  

Athletics – The children will be running at different speeds, jumping and throwing equipment. They will also measure their performance and compete to improve their own score against others.   

Swimming – The pupils will learn about water safety and enjoyment of being in the water. They will learn to travel with a float and submerge with increasing confidence. They will begin to learn to use legs and arms to propel them through water.

Music  

 

This half term, the children will do two units called: Dancing and drawing to Nautilus & Cat and Mouse. In the first unit the pupils will do active musical signals, internalise beats, draw to music and movement. In the second unit they will learn about mood, tempo, dynamics, timbre and dot notation. 

  

In the next half term, they will learn about a unit called: Come dance with me which focusses on call-and-response. The pupils will learn echo singing, playing percussion, develop beat skills, crotchet rest and quavers.
