Weekly Update - Autumn 1 / Week 8
Dear Parents and Carers
As we wrap up the first half term of Reception, we’re so proud of how much the children have grown in confidence, curiosity, and independence. This week has been full of exciting learning experiences, and we’re delighted to share some highlights with you!
🧮 Maths: Exploring 'More Than' and 'Less Than'
In maths, we’ve been developing our understanding of quantity by comparing groups of objects. The children have been using vocabulary such as “more than”, “less than”, and “fewer” to describe and compare sets. We used practical resources like counting bears, cubes, and learning resources to make these concepts come alive. It’s been wonderful to see the children confidently explaining their thinking.
🪔 Celebrating Diwali
This week we learned about the Hindu festival of Diwali – the 5 day Festival of Lights. We read the beautiful story “The Best Diwali Ever” by Sonali Shah, which helped us understand the importance of family, tradition, and celebration. The children made thoughtful connections to their own experiences of celebrations.
To bring the story to life, we created our own diyas (traditional Diwali lamps) using clay. The children carefully shaped and decorated their diyas, showing great focus and creativity. These will be coming home today – we hope they bring a little sparkle to your homes!

🤝 PE: Learning to Work Together
In PE, we’ve been focusing on developing our coordination and teamwork skills. This week, the children practised rolling and bouncing a ball to a partner. They learned how to take turns, communicate clearly, and work cooperatively to keep the ball moving between them. It was lovely to see pairs encouraging each other and celebrating their successes together. These activities are helping to build not only physical skills but also important social ones like patience and collaboration.
🌟 Looking Ahead
After a well-deserved break, we’re excited to continue our learning journey in Autumn 2. Thank you for your continued support and for helping your children come to school ready to learn and explore each day.
Wishing you all a restful and joyful half term break
