Weekly Update - Autumn 1 / Week 5
🍂 Reception Round-Up – Autumn 1 – Week 5 🍂
Dear Parents and Carers
We’ve had a wonderful few weeks in Reception, full of learning, creativity, and outdoor adventures!
✏️ Phonics Fun
In our phonics sessions, we’ve been exploring the sounds g, o, c, and k. The children have been practising how to say each phoneme clearly, identify it in words, and write the corresponding grapheme. You can support your child at home by encouraging them to find objects that begin with these sounds – perhaps a grape, orange, cup or key!
🔢 Maths Moments
In maths, we’ve been focusing on 1:1 counting – a key early skill that helps children understand that each object counted represents one number. The children have been helping the class puppets learn to count properly – remembering to count each object only once, to count in order and that the last number counted is how many there are. We have even found out that you can count things that can’t be seen or touched such as beats of a drum or claps of our hands!
🎨 All About Me
Our creative work has been all about self-portraits. The children have looked closely at their features and used mirrors to help them draw their eyes, noses, mouths, and hair. We’ve talked about what makes us unique and celebrated our differences. The results are amazing and proudly displayed in our classroom!
🌿 Outdoor Explorers
Autumn is nearly upon us, and we noticed that leaves have begun to fall from the trees and this has provided the perfect backdrop for our outdoor learning. This week we have been threading autumn leaves to create autumn caterpillars. This has helped develop fine motor skills and sparked lots of conversations about the changing seasons. The children loved choosing their leaves and watching their caterpillars grow!
Thank you for your continued support. It’s been a joy to see the children settling into Reception and embracing all the new experiences. As always, if you have any questions or would like ideas for supporting learning at home, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
